Research Opportunities with Ultracold Neutrons in the US

November 6--7, 2009

Hotel Santa Fe and the Hacienda & Spa, Santa Fe, New Mexico

1501 Paseo De Peralta

The purpose of this workshop is to discuss the motivation and challenges associated with research opportunities with ultracold neutrons in the US.  Possible measurements include the neutron lifetime, angular correlations in neutron decay, observation of gravitationally bound quantum states, and improved limits on neutron-antineutron oscillations.  In addition we will discuss the development of techniques relevant to the planned neutron static electric dipole moment search and the study of material surfaces.  Emphasis will be placed on identifying the current theoretical motivations for these measurements.  Challenging issues, such as correctly characterizing the systematic errors in existing and planned neutron lifetime measurements, will also be specifically addressed.  The status of worldwide UCN sources will be presented, with emphasis on the operating UCN source at LANSCE and other, planned US facilities.
